Corduroy
Our second week of school, we continued to stress out type-A/OCD readers by picking a random book from the list. By random I mean we already had it and I didn't want to go to the library. So we read Corduroy.
Activity #1: I've always had a soft spot for zoology. As a kid I wanted to be a vet for a hot minute, then realized I don't like blood or poop or being bitten. So I became a mother? Little did I know...
Anyhow, our first activity was talking about animal homes. Perusing Pinterest, I saw this printout, but drew my own based on it.
Activity 1.2: going off of activity #1, we went on a field trip to a petting zoo down the road. We looked the chicken coop and the rabbit cages and the pig sty. And on display inside the little store, there was a giant bees nest behind glass and a collection of old birds nests. They boys really enjoyed it, but I think they liked the goats the best.
Activity #2: We did a counting game based on this printable I found. But since we were out of printer paper, I used bright orange paper plates with rectangles drawn on them with corresponding numbers. I bought a box of Teddy Grahams and fought off a ravenous daddy just for this activity. Of course the kids wanted to eat every one they counted, but one to twelve is 105 cookies. Not happening. They count each eat ONE from every counting plate.
In case you're wondering, ravenous daddy ate the rest.
Activity #3: The Sheriff sees me sewing a lot. I like to embroider on burlap, especially when we're watching our favorite show, the A-Team. In the last part of Corduroy, Lisa sews a button onto his overalls.
So I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a baggie of cross stitch crosses for 0.97. I didn't go into depth about how to do it correctly, I just let him get used to it. I thought it came out lovely! We may make a few for Christmas presents.
I really wanted to do more, like having a "tea party" and working on manners (Lisa was a very polite little girl) or talking about saving money, but I believe something came up and we weren't up for more school.
The Sheriff often asks to play the counting game, but we don't have Teddy Grahams (I seriously doubt I will ever buy them again... DON'T READ THE BACK OF THE BOX!). I plan do do it again with raisins instead.
